Improving your Immunity.

Improving your Immunity.

HOW TO!

we all get sick. Some, more then others. I for one get sick all the time. I have a super busy and crazy stressed life and find that that, mixed with working with kids makes for a dangerous combo.

I’ve tried to find ways to improve my immune system to avoid getting sick every 3 weeks and as I stand Ive boiled it down to a healthy life style. This includes the following:

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Control your blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.
  • Get regular medical screening tests for people in your age group and risk category.

Although there are alot of products that say they can boost your improve your immunity but that might not an accurate statement. one expert says “Many products on store shelves claim to boost or support immunity. But the concept of boosting immunity actually makes little sense scientifically. In fact, boosting the number of cells in your body — immune cells or others — is not necessarily a good thing. For example, athletes who engage in “blood doping” — pumping blood into their systems to boost their number of blood cells and enhance their performance — run the risk of strokes.”

Anyone have their own idea.

I would also like to add a couple of items you can incorporate into your daily life if you tend to be sickly and want to “boost your immunity”…a lot of bee products (raw organic honey, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly) are high in anti-microbial enzymes to help you fight off infection, as well as foods high in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, and elderflower or elderberries. You can find elderflower at an herb or apothecary shop (my favorite is the Essential Elements Apothecary shop on SE Hawthorne around 31st or 32nd avenue) and drink one cup in the morning (boil water then turn off the stove and add 1 tsp elderflower/8 oz water and let steep 5-10 minutes) or get an elderberry syrup or tincture (there is a good one sold in the health food section of Fred meyer that has other herbs in it like myrrh, peppermint, eucalyptus, mullien, echinacea…). These products work best if used in conjunction with the habits in the post above (getting enough sleep, etc).
